OUR MISSION IS SIMPLE.
We make and sell ultra-cool affordable retro robot art!
OUR STORY IS TRUE.
Robot-O-Mat started out when a nerdy artistic dad, me, wanted to create special gifts for his three young children. My desire was to give them something fun and whimsical that they would value and cherish over time for the thoughtfulness and love that I put into it. This was a tall order, considering that the gifts were for three kids between the ages of six and eleven who, like most kids today, had become over-stimulated and desensitized by years electronics, multi-media, and mindless mass-produced poorly-manufactured off-the-shelf plastic toys. I felt as though my kids were losing touch with their ability to appreciate and value simple things for their beauty, creativity, and craftsmanship.
The idea for a robot made completely out of recycled household objects came to me one day while cleaning out my home workshop. Left with a pile of miscellaneous junk, spare parts, and retired kitchen paraphernalia, I noticed a few objects that seemed to have human-like features. Being the dork that I am, I started to reposition them like a puzzle until I had something that resembled a robot’s face staring back at me. That’s when I got the inspiration for the gifts.
The first robots were a little rough. They had burrs and rust, and a few extra drill holes where things didn’t go quite right. They were lopsided, wobbly, and immediately loved by their recipients. Each one oozed a unique personality and attitude, and had a funky retro feel from the quirky objects and crude manufacturing methods used to create them. They turned out to be one of my children’s most cherished possessions, and they still sit proudly in prominent spots in their bedrooms today.
Before long, I was getting requests for robots from friends, coworkers, and anyone else who saw what we were doing. It was clear that we were on to something really cool, so we invested in some infrastructure, called-in some favors from business associates, and put up a sign. Check ‘em out, and please buy one. Once you own one of our robots, you’ll understand why we do this.
WE DO IT BECAUSE ROBOTS MAKE PEOPLE HAPPY.
You’ll love your new robot. They are unpretentious, whimsical, and reminiscent of a time when everything was hand-made with care. However, the real art and magic is the assembling, bending, and positioning of familiar objects in such a way that they seem to come to life and take on a personality of their own. This is what turns ordinary household objects into something that makes people smile. Early on, we used to be able to hand-deliver each robot to its new owner. We would love to see the smiles and amazement on their faces as we exceeded their expectations about what could be done with simple materials. Today we’re making even more people smile, we just don’t get to witness it each time. We do get positive feedback via email letters, and it just fuels our desire to keep doing this.
We also get to do something positive for our community. With Ohio’s depressed economy, many machine shops are struggling to find work. We are proud to be able to provide these craftsmen a small but steady flow of work to help them weather the economy. You can feel confident and proud knowing your robot was assembled in the US.
DOING THINGS A BETTER WAY IS IN OUR DNA.
Believe it or not, we haven’t always been making robots. In fact, we’re management consultants and engineers with deep expertise in manufacturing, operations, process improvement, and supply chain/strategic sourcing. If it can be optimized, streamlined, right-sized, or re-engineered, we’re gonna do it. We can’t leave anything alone. That said, once we decided we were going to make robots, we couldn’t just stop there. We had to figure out how to source parts cheaper and faster, how to simplify the design and production process in order to minimize labor and defect rates, and how to streamline order fulfillment. All this means you get the best product at the lowest possible price. There’s a saying in the consulting business that says “good, fast, or cheap… pick two”, but at Robot-O-Mat we believe that we can provide our customers all three.
